Long River Area Home
Completed 2010
This couple, that originally came from the States several years ago, bought this old farmhouse that they had fallen in love with. But, as old farmhouses go, the kitchen area was the last thing that seemed to be ever considered. In saying this, this couple, or shall we say THE WIFE of this couple, dealt with a pantry area measuring almost 8' wide and nearly 10' long, which contained her kitchen sink, refrigerator, stove, all storage area and countertop working space. Need we say more? She had dreamed of the ultimate kitchen for years. Finally, circumstances prevailed, and they were able to follow the wife's dream. This involved the ripping off of the old, very small pantry area and digging out a full basement to allow for the construction of a new 12' x 20' kitchen area. In keeping with the old farmhouse decor, as you can tell from the pictures, we of course, used all wood and wood products for all eave trims, corner casings, and decorative features above the large new vinyl windows that we installed, and used Eastern cedar shingles as the exterior siding product, to have the new addition appear as if it was always part of the original homestead. The interior was another challenge, as the couple really wanted to have a century old kitchen. First and foremost, the walls were all properly insulated, gyprock installed, crack-filled and painted, etc. Next, the matter of ceiling and flooring had to be dealt with. As the couple really liked the wood ceiling look, we used tongue-and-groove pine boards of superior quality to create an old-fashioned kitchen ceiling. Then we used tongue-and-groove pine boards, but put the grooved side down, so that it just looked like square edged boards side by side were installed for the flooring, thus keeping with the century home look. Then the issue of kitchen cupboards came into play, of course you can tell by the pictures that these were all totally hand-framed and designed onsite. The fact of having a rather large propane stove installed on a 45 degree angle in the corner, only added to the complications of the cupboard project. Plus the fact of having a proper over the stove range hood exhaust vent system, that was totally invisible, had to be dealt with. Hence, the black chimney looking effect that we had to build over the stove to deal with the exhaust issue. The homeowners chose to paint a large portion of these cupboards, as it was keeping with the old-fashioned decor of having painted rather than varnished cupboards years ago. Therefore, the installation of a solid wood butcher block countertop only added to the beauty of the kitchen area. This couple were so absolutely enthralled with their new addition, that they placed their home in the Christmas House Tour, where, as I understand, they had well over 200 people come through their house on that evening alone, to see what they had done. These are very proud homeowners, and very good customers of ours.

Restorations

Long River Area Home
Completed 2001
This was a major, major undertaking, as the old house was very delapitated and run-down, when the new owners from Alberta purchased it. The first step was to raise the old house up out of the ground, where it had been sitting for many many years, installing many new sills and floor joists to strengthen the bottom structure of the house, before installing a new concrete foundation underneath it. Upon completing this, we took to waterproofing the exterior of the house. This involved removing all roofing products, wooden trims, windows, and siding, and starting from scratch. We replaced all and any boards that were rotten or decayed, installed new vinyl windows, and decorated the windows with a wooden trim to give the hundred year old century home look. All exterior eave trims and corner casings were made of wood, and Eastern cedar shingles were installed over all the house. As black was virtually the only color ever used for roofing shingles 100 years ago, the homeowners chose black asphalt as the roof color, to keep the century home look. The exterior shingles and trims were never painted or touched, as the owners wished to have them age with dignity, and acquire that old look.

As for the interior, everything was gutted and thrown out, all interior walls, and many exterior walls, were restudded from the inside to create a straight and true wall. The house was completely rewired, and all new plumbing added, before being totally insulated and gyprock installed. All interior trims were made by a milling company we use, to acquire the century home look. We installed a hemlock tongue-and-groove floor, throughout the downstairs area, to keep with the century home look. In the kitchen area, we constructed new but old looking cupboards, using all new wood and wood products, but designing drawer and door fronts to resemble century year old cupboards. Even the hardware the homeowner located for the drawer and door fronts were of past historical design. This is a totally new house, as one might say, but when you walk into the yard, and enter the house, you feel as though you've stepped back in time 100 years, which is exactly what the homeowners were hoping to achieve.Top of Page
